It is impossible to start any story about the history of Dobrinjsko, the territory encompassed by the Municipality of Dobrinj, without mentioning the town of Dobrinj first.
One of the most significant Croatian documents written in the Glagolitic alphabet, Listina slavnog Dragoslava (literally: Deed of Gift of Dragoslav the Famous), dating from 1100, was drafted “...just in front of Dobrinj, next to the Church of Saint Vitus...” (“...pred Dobrinjem, poli crikve svetog Vida...”).
Although it is in terms of origin one of the younger (if not the youngest) villages in the Municipality of Dobrinj and although it does not have significant hotel capacities, Šilo is still the main tourist center of Dobrinjsko.
Except for the fact that it boasts the longest tradition in tourism in this region, the tourist center of Dobrinjsko is significant on a wider historical scale as well. At the beginning of 1905, the Krk Steam Shipping Company (Krčko parobrodarsko društvo), the first such company on the island of Krk, was established.
In the past few years, the healing effects of mud from the Melina beach have been officially proven on the basis of concrete cases turning the Soline Bay into an increasingly attractive summer destination.
Besides the already mentioned village of Meline, the bay area also encompasses Soline, Čižići and Klimno. The names of the villages situated in the bay area were partly determined on the basis of their natural significance...
Hinterland (Zaobalje) is the name used to refer to the villages of the Municipality of Dobrinj that are not situated by the sea but are nevertheless oriented towards tourism, especially in more recent times.
With the rising interest for the so-called rural tourism, the demand for accommodation in the hinterland has also started to grow. People are looking for a vacation destination away from the summer hustle and bustle yet close to summer enjoyments and sea activities.
The fact that it is one of the sunniest parts of Europe is considered one of many favorable features of the island of Krk. According to the calculation, the average number of sunny hours per year is 2500.
Besides by the large number of sunny hours, the island of Krk is characterized by a mild Mediterranean climate. Whatever is true of the island of Krk is also true of the Dobrinj region. It can thus be concluded that the average summer season is usually extended here.
